No Pre-Release Prototype Demo

Activision's shape changer won't be getting a demo before release but do we really need one?

Most big games nowadays conjure up a demo for the PSN and XBLA. Prototype won’t, at least for now: Activision have confirmed that there will be no demo before June the 9th, Prototype’s release date. That doesn’t necessarily mean we will never see one but those of you expecting to compare inFamous and Prototype before buying are going to need to rethink your plan.

I love a good demo. They can make or break a purchase for me. I would never have bought Mirror’s Edge had I not been given that tasty little teaser. However, demos can also consist of old code and a game’s true potential can remain unplayed. Motorstorm: Pacific Rift is an example of old code hiding a brilliant game but Evolution Studios kindly gave us a second demo to entice more people.

Demos also push people onboard the hype train. Exhibit A – inFamous. Sony’s seemingly random emails containing exclusive codes to download the demo early were chased after all over the internet. Was it the right idea though? I certainly know a few people put off by the demo, one of which loves the full game now. They really can place a game in bad light. If more time was put into a demo to ensure it reflected the final game do you really care if it’s late? I personally don’t. Call of Duty never had a demo, it seemed to do well.

In the meantime, check out Prototype’s E3 trailer below and have a look at the Official Site.
