The “What will Kinect cost?” merry-go-round continues a-spinning, with retailer ShopTo quoting their RRP for Microsoft’s new room-destroyer at a princely £129.99 in the UK. A release date is also quoted – November 19th. Officially the device’s price is still under consideration, but it’s looking highly likely that the $149.99 US figure (also still to be ratified by Microsoft) will not be translating into a sub £100 comparative amount in the UK. Can’t wait for the euro equivalent.
What say you? Too high? Just right for the technology on offer? Are UK gamers getting ripped off based on current currency exchange rates? Have your say in the comments. It will make you feel better.

Will this include any game a la Wii Sports? Seems a little too expensive to be honest….
BIGAL-1992
I’ll save up for an ACTUAL 360, without buying this waste of cash. It’s underperofrmed for me.
BIGAL-1992
*Underperformed
woodsy321
Im not sure I agree with the underperformed, but it certainly hasnt started to perform yet, and at that price its a bit of a barrier, and whos going to make games for 1 million kinect customers when you could have a 14 million market (at least) of wii customers???
Apnomis
If you take a look at the original mock-up launch trailer of the types of things you’d be doing with Kinect in your home and how accurate and responsive it was, it’s fair to argue it’s underperformed… It’s certainly failing to live up to it’s hype so far, with a disappointing and predictable set of launch party games and fitness titles, a high price tag, and continual reports of terrible lag, inaccurate tracking, the need to stand up, and only two-player support.

I cannot see this selling consoles at all. I think the only people who are gonna buy one are existing 360 owners. Granted that is still a big market but unless the inevitable bundle is VERY competitively priced, they are gonna struggle.
I think the same is true of Move but Sony have the advantage of being able to quote the price of one controller (and no sub controller) so it looks much cheaper
foeroyingur
plus you can use the one move controller without the sub controller.
jimmy-google
I think that’s the big difference. The outlay if you don’t own a console is far higher on the 360 and ps3 so the wii will still own that market.
The difference comes when MS and Sony try to sell these products to their existing markets. MS will have Kinext priced around the same area of a Wii so they’ve giving themselves extra competition especially as there aren’t really any “core” games announced yet. Buy a whole console or just an add on? The wii will appear better value.
Sony on the other hand can sell a startup bundle for around £45-£50. There’s less risk and is probably just cheap enough to be an impulse buy. Yes it will cost more in the long run but given the choice you will see a lot of the “core” market spend £50 trying out Move than taking a chance on a £130 wii which is very casual focused.

Kinect is something i want, and now tha i have a full time job i don’t mind paying however much but my concern is the price is too much for people getting a 360 and Kinect for the first time. I’m hoping this is a bundle with the animal and sports titles, just to make it more appealing for people.
No doubt a 60gb slim Kinect Bundle will come at xmas with 2 games. I’m guessing £199
djhsecondnature
Really? I would be astounded at that price. A £250 bundle would seem more inline with Microsofts current pricing.
Willzay
At a loss to Microsoft but they’d mka ie back with software. They just need to get it out there, i think the casual market will snatch it up gradually and it’ll gain momentum from there.
Some People are still confuse by the amount of buttons on the wii, so no buttons will be a big selling point i think.
woodsy321
Yes, but thats the thing, they arent (or dont seem to be) selling it at a loss. ( i recall $100 manufacturing costs) so there’s no loss being made. how many would have bought a playstation if sony charged the full £499 the ps3 originally cost? not me for one
Apnomis
I would go as far to say £299/$399 for the Elite/Kinect bundle. This would make it the same price as the US PS3 Move Bundle that was announced at E3. Both will likely come with a game too.
mrfodder
Slight rip off compared to US prices. Most people forget that US prices never include sales tax/VAT. Complete rip off based on what it actually is.
DRCD1
Seeing that 60$USD games cost 70€, then this will likely cost 170-180€… pfff… I’ve seen Xbox360s Elites with a game cheaper than that!
Raen
Remember that this is only the price ShopTo are listing. Seems odd that it’s only them, rather than a whole glut of retailers listing it at that price. I’m waiting to see what MS say.
djhsecondnature
It’s also the price that they are promoting. The Kinect promotional email hammered home this price point.
Raen
I know, but the email also hammered home they don’t know what the actual RRP is.
Willzay
This is the pricing situation for someone looking into motion gaming, based on buying a new console with the added hardware for motion gaming.
Lets say they want the ability to have 2 people playing.
360 slim 199.99
Kinect 129.99
Overall 330.00 rounded up
Maximum Players 2
PS3 Slim £249.99
Move pack (cam & move, no sub) £49.99
Sub Controller £24.99
Second Move £34.99
Overall £360 rounded up, assuming the second player uses the included Dual Shock controller instead of another sub move controller
Maximum Players 2? not sure
Wii £164.99
wiimote £27.99
Nunchuck £17.99
Overall £211 rounded up
Maximum players 4? i think so.
Wii £211
360 £330
PS3 £360
thoughts?

If you a casual gamer you’ll go for a Wii as it more established and has a bigger catalogue of motion games. It’s also the console most of your friends who have casual games would have.
I can’t see the 360 or PS3 attracting much of the casual crowd yet.
Willzay
true true, i have a feeling Dance Central will go down a storm, maybe not straight away but when casual gamers start seeing it, it’ll sell well.
Move will sell well with the hardcore, Kinect for the Casual.
I look forward to Child of Eden on Kinect, and hopefully Milo one day.
Heavy rain for Move, i can’t wait for the update.
djhsecondnature
Thoughts are…you missed this: http://www.thesixthaxis.com/2010/06/23/move-vs-kinect-it-all-adds-up/
Willzay
i did miss that, i only occassionally visit TSA so my bad.
Mine was just price comparison based on just the hardware really, no extras, hopefullly these comparisons can live in harmony :)
bunimomike
It always makes for interesting reading but all factors need to be included. It only takes someone with a HighDef TV to think “if I’m buying a new console I want one with a Blu-ray” and things change instantly. Equally, the situation with friends currently owning a particular console, etc. So many influences. Each console having their own respective pros and cons.
Willzay
Yeah true. I think some of the casual audience don’t always consider everything when it comes to what they buy. I know people that don’t give a crap about HD, they’re more than happy with dvd’s for films and will watch a video happily, which to me is frankly shocking.
i think the nintendo better come up with something big for the casual market soon, another wii sports or fit, or like the hardcore, it’ll be left aside to gather dust. I think Kinect could take over in a big way, or flop, hard.

Stop with the legitimizing costings!
Or, what about costing it up for those of us who already have consoles? I’ve got a PSeye and am happy to use my Dual Shock as a subcontroller. £35 for move and starter game…sold. We should put these price comparisons to one side till we see the console bundles with the motion controllers. What do you reckon – Slim PS3 with Move and a game @ £249.00. Wouldn’t surprise me.
Apnomis
Don’t underestimate the number of casual gamers that already have a PS3 – either for a blu-ray player or for games like Buzz and SingStar. The PS3 has quite a diverse userbase already, and the key thing for Move is it appeals to hardcore SOCOM players at the same time as hardcore SingStar players!
Microsoft took the stance early on of saying “We are the console for hardcore gamers, we are the home of Halo, we don’t need additional non-gaming features and we give casual gamers the finger!” – now they are desparately trying to backtrack with things like Twitter and Lips and by giving their core supporters the finger with a peripheral that sits firmly in the casual space with very little chance of becoming a must-have for a core gamer (ie the ones that already own a 360)…
Aaron Greenburg once bragged that Halo has outsold all the PS3’s exclusives combined, but this to me is a negative not a positive – it just shows that the core Xbox experience is Halo, whereas the PS3 offers a diverse range of experiences for an audience with a diverse range of interests…
david
It could be £30 and I still wouldn’t buy it as there isn’t a game worth playing on it.
Divine
I’m compelled to agree.

Makes me wonder just how much MS ploughed into R&D for Natect.
