What We Played #124: Lone Survivor, Inazuma Eleven 3 & GTA V

What We PlayedPrior to popping down to London for Eurogamer Expo Blair hasn’t had much time for gaming so he’s chosen to fixate upon GTA V.  He notes only that “it’s a lot of fun and the Skyfall cheat might be the best thing ever” (L1 L2 R1 R2 < > < > L1 L2 R1 R2 < > < >).  He’s also hoping to finish the story before the online launches on Tuesday.

Tuffcub has been playing Resident Evil 6 which he “really likes” as well as Lone Survivor while still ambling his way through the shuffling hordes of The Walking Dead on his PlayStation Vita.  There will be a considerable dearth of surprise among regulars readers when I mention that Killzone 3 has also featured in his week’s gaming.

Bemoaning a lack of broadband now he’s returned to Portsmouth Uni, Jim is relying on his dongle to provide entertainment.  That’s a USB dongle for those of you sniggering at the back and it’s his only link to the WWW we take for granted these days.  Back in my own days at Uni I was studying alongside people marvelling at this new-fangled HTML thing and the Internet was what you used for FTP – normally heading over to nic.funet.fi like all the cool kids.

Where I was able to find solace in the original Civilization, Jim has this seasons hottest new property, GTA V:

It’s a great game to say the least but after ten or so hours in the appeal is definitely starting to fade. No matter how much better it looks and feels compared to its predecessors, there’s a tedious sense of familiarity dragging down the overall experience. In a way I knew this would happen though the prospect of playing Grand Theft Auto Online next week leaves me little to complain about.

He’s also been rekindling old memories with Kingdom Hearts 1.5 HD and indulging in some cheap gaming courtesy of Magic: The Gathering.  The one with cards!  “Considering how expensive some of my other hobbies are, it’s satisfying to slap down a tenner on a new deck and some boosters which have already provided a good few hours of entertainment.”  And of course when he tires of it he’s got a deck full of beer mats to hand.

Dom has been playing Inazuma 113 Eleven 3 for our review “which was fun” as well as some Uncharted 3 and Diablo 3 demo, the latter of which he enjoyed but like me has decided to wait for it to hit PS4.

Last but not least this week, we find DanToo ‘enjoying’ freshers week in Swansea, who valiantly got in touch despite the self-inflicted suffering of “the worst hangover ever”.  Can’t be any worse than some of the Thunderbird-fuelled hangovers I recall enduring in the name of fun.  In the brief moments when his room stabilises he too has been playing GTA V, is “having a lot of fun with it” and reckons he’s getting close to completion.  No doubt looking to free up more time for drinking.

Have those of you who aren’t too drunk or busy during freshers to reply played anything this week?

  1. A little bit of GTA, I think its the sort of game I’ll keep going back to – I don’t want it to be over too quickly.

A lot of Killzone Mercenary which is good both off and online, although the rocket launcher spamming in MP has become more frequent which is annoying.

I’ve also played an hours worth or so of The Walking Dead on Vita.

I started GoW:A last night and played the first few chapters. I don’t usually go for these bashy combat sort of games, but that appeals since it’s different to everything else I play, and the scale is impressive!

I’m hoping to also start Lone Survivor over the weekend. And there’s Rain and Beyond: Two Souls to look forward to next week!

    • Though the rocket spamming is annoying (and nothing can replace that feeling I think), I have worked out that it might work to our advantage seeing as those kind of people are likely to drop heart and diamond valour cards (because launchers are secondary weapons) of the rare sort in multiplayer which is good for getting the ‘full deck’ trophy.

      • Ah, every cloud then eh! ;)

Was hoping you might have shot me with a tranquilizer last night seeing as we were on different teams for a chance, but no such luck. I’ll keep trying ;)

      • Yeah I had trouble shooting any of you last night with a tranquilliser gun. Your team was fast, so much I got spangled several times. I’ve yet to rescue a team mate in Warzone myself.

Unfortunately I had another random disconnect courtesy of the game.

      • Lucky, I want to be spangled, lol!!

Oh, that explains where you went then. Fingers crossed it will be ok for tonight!

  2. Finally finished killzone Mercenary which is must for any via owner. Also finally have my hands on the last of us. Only a few hours in but really enjoying it. Hopefully I’ll have fifa this week for something a little more light hearted

  3. All GTA V. Not played anything else since the release. Notched up about 30 hours and thats not even touching the side missions and the quest too 100% it. Lots more hours of game-play plus the online portion is releases on the 2nd so it still wont leave the PS3.

  4. Ah freshers week, great days… What little I can remember of them! ;)

Took advantage of the double XP w/e on Blops2 and finally got the last Assault Rifle camos I needed for the diamond camo. Not that I want it, think it looks crap but I have to have goals; just running around shooting people for the hell of it doesn’t quite do it for me.

Otherwise it’s been GTAV. I have to agree with Jim, whilst they’ve managed to make some incredible leaps in some areas, others have barely moved at all and it’s just missing that vital spark. Ok the mechanics may for the most part be better than GTAIV, but they still fall short of the best in other games which is disappointing, almost like they’ve ignored what everyone else has been doing for the last 5 years – R* arrogance perhaps?

Next time I won’t fall for they hype and I’ll wait for some decent user reviews, I think every “professional” review I read was more like PR esque hyperbole than actual objective opinion based on more than a few hours of play time. But hey, plenty of plenty of people seem to love it so maybe it’s just me…

    • Yeah I kinda agree with GTA. Also I think the main story missions are great as it seems a lot of thought has gone into the acting and conversations, but some of the side missions are a drag for me….the repetition of going from A-B constantly doesn’t appeal in the slightest (especially when the map is so big) and is just the same as in previous GTAs, just dressed differently. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a great game, but even great games have their flaws. I wish every mission could be as good as the heist missions!

  5. Getting ridiculous kdr’s on Killzone vita & working to the 1000g on Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate.

  6. GTA5. Finished the main story (which I didn’t think was as good/complex/twisting as GTA4) and now have hours and hours of collectables to search for. The map is big, but it doesn’t seem as huge as I thought it would be? Certainly not as big as GTA4 + GTA:SA + RDR combined, which I believe was the claim? The city of Los Santos is great, but Blaine County feels a bit slapdash. Lots of good individual locations (quarry, prison, wind farm, vinyard) all slapped down next to each other. I dunno, just doesn’t feel real. The radio stations were better in GTA4 too. Roy Ayers in particular, but also East Coast Hip Hop is far far far superior to West, imo. These are the only negatives I have for an otherwise amazing game.

  7. I got Need for Speed Most Wanted for Vita and had blast on that for a while, but gone back to Assassins Creed Liberation to finish the story because I want Killzone Mercenary.
On the PS3 it’s been GTA V exclusively. Loving it – all the characters are great although I think Trevor is my favourite just because he is over the top crazy.

  8. I’ve only played Final Fantasy XIV ARR and Spelunky this week and I don’t think that will change anytime soon. Loving FFXIV so far (Lv 30 Lancer, 10 Pugilist, 10 Marauder) and Spelunky is a perfect way to piss myself off just before I go to sleep… :D

  9. This week has just been spent grinding away on Diablo 3 for the 5 million gold trophy. I’ve never had a grind this bad before, its truly horrific. it takes longer that the 5 playthroughs needed for all the other trophies put together. Oh well, Should have it finished in a few years :( Any free time i had i have finished off The Walking Dead on vita and nabbed the plat. Also started Lone Survivor at work this morning which is great. Love the pixel art style

    • I thought you enjoyed the Gold grind, lol? :p

      • I enjoy it about as much as sticking needles through my balls whilst a hot iron seers my penis

  10. Nothing much, busy getting ready to go back UNi & work been keeping me busy. Played some GTA & looking to KZ:M meet with the lads later today
