What We Played #151: Abe’s Oddysee, Trials Fusion & Monument Valley

I could bore you to tears once more by recounting that I’ve only played Warframe and Borderlands 2 again this week. But I won’t. Instead we’ll see if you’re any more successful at decoding the relevance of “T20 T17 D20” this week than some of the staff were. For the record, only Peter got it right.

As his reward, instead of making any insulting, suggestive or derisory comments I’ll just let you read what he’s been playing (mainly to avoid any blame for the third paragraph…).

I’ve played a healthy amount of Football Manager Classic 2014 on Vita, the review [should be around here somewhere] but the short answer is that it’s very good if you like Football Manager and don’t mind fiddling about with tiny touchscreen buttons.

I also played a bit of The Elder Scrolls Online – which is my first MMO – and I’ve been very surprised at how much like Skyrim it is. I’m basically playing it like a single player game and just trying to ignore the other players that are standing around quest-givers or leaping down staircases. At some point I expect I’ll have to talk to another player in some capacity but for the moment it’s just like I’m playing a normal Elder Scrolls game but there’s some lunatics in the game world.

Finally, I’ve been playing Trials Fusion on PS4 but that’s for review and it’s embargoed so I can’t tell you anything about that. I can say that the PC beta for the game that I’ve also been playing is very nice looking, with some excellently designed levels to balance your bike around though. Hopefully the full game continues with the tightly designed levels and tricky jumps and balances… *obvious wink*

Dan seems to have finally rediscovered his PlayStation 4 and after not playing much for a while went a bit crazy this week. There’s Tomb Raider, which he says he’s “enjoying more than any Uncharted game” and Strike Suit Zero which he reviewed for us earlier this week and summarises as “repetitive but enjoyable”.

In the grip of his gaming urges he succumbed to the Green Side and bought an Xbox One and as a result Forza has started to consume hours at a frightening rate and despite his normal aversion to online gaming he claims to be enjoying the “surprisingly good” Titanfall.

A review of Ethan Meteor Hunter (is that Ethan, Meteor Hunter or Ethan Meteor, Hunter? They sound like two very different games) is in progress over at the Aran household so expect to read about that next week. He’s completed his Hero playthrough of inFamous Second Son and has started MOOing MMOing with Star Wars The Old Republic.

Stefan would very much like you to believe him:

The FIFA competition inspired me to dig out my disc and get up to some FIFA 14 Pro Clubs mischief with Wick15 and Tony Cawley. We were quite bad, if I remember correctly.

I also went and played the first hour and a bit of the classic Abe’s Oddysee, a game that I’ve never played before, if you can believe that.

You can believe that, by the way. Why would I lie to you?

And lastly we get to the bean throwing podcasting Blair who has been on a post-dissertation gaming binge. First there was Smash Bros. followed by Tomb Raider and then some Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons. That in turn led to “the arcadey brilliance of” Call of Juarez: Gunslinger before “the calm, beautiful and serene” Monument Valley which segued into reviewing LEGO The Hobbit.

So, do you believe Stefan? Have you played anything worth mentioning this week?

  1. My last week of gaming has been pretty similar to what it was 4 or 5 months ago…

    Batltlefield 4, Batltlefield 4, Batltlefield 4, Batltlefield 4, Batltlefield 4, Batltlefield 4, Batltlefield 4, Batltlefield 4, Batltlefield 4, Batltlefield 4, FIFA, Batltlefield 4, Batltlefield 4, Batltlefield 4, FIFA, FIFA, Batltlefield 4, Batltlefield 4, Batltlefield 4, Batltlefield 4, Batltlefield 4, Batltlefield 4, Batltlefield 4, FIFA & Batltlefield 4.

    • Is Batltlefield 4 the dyslexic version of Battlefield 4? ;p
Whatever it is, you obviously like playing it.

  2. An amazing week for me, first up i battled against almost unsurmountable odds to acquire all the trophies for Abes Animals. Once i completed that 315 second exercise, i went back to Tomb Raider and acquired not only a grand total of zero additional trophies for my second playthrough, but i also finished on a lower overall percentage complete than my first playthrough. Woo! can’t wait to see the leaderboard this week! .. :P

  3. I’ve been pretty much concentrating on just 2 games this week … Fuel on PS3 and Moto GP 13 on Vita, both of which I am close to attaining the platinum. Forrest is helping me out with the online stuff in Fuel and Avenger, Freezebug, Crazy Del and myself are working on the Moto GP stuff.

I’m very jealous of Peter as I am extremely excited for Trials Fusion next week.

  4. I’ve been carrying on with mercenary kings, which I do enjoy in short bursts.
I bought olli olli and rainbow moon for peanuts in the easter sale,so I’ve started playing them.
Olli olli is great,it’s tricky and can be frustrating but so addictive with it :-)

  5. So bought gods among us vita, I can only say I regret it my God it’s awful looking game to look at, I usually don’t notice all this resolution Malachi but this game you have to be blind not too.

Tried FF collection, it’s bad game, I can not for the life of me get it nor understand it, I died & it was game over I mean literally game over wtf.

But on the good side, football manager is brilliant, the only negative thing, it doesn’t dwell well with big hands, the writing too small to read at times

  6. I platted Lego LotR earlier this week. Now is at 4 in 4 weeks. I’ve started playing Sly 4 again to hopefully make 6 in 4 weeks, as it’s an easy double Platinum. Also I’ve been playing Hotline Miami, Lego the Hobbit, Football manager classic and a few others what I can’t remember at this time.

  7. Got the Infamous:SS platinum, then tried MGS Ground Zeroes but I really suck at stealth games! Gave mercenary kings a stab but it didn’t grab me, and finally tried out Don’t Starve which saw some fairly short lived games… And to end the week of variety a bit of Ghosts.

Not so much “played”, but “played with” (steady, I know what some of the dirtier minds round here are thinking!) my new headset too! Picked up a SteelSeries Wireless H and it’s great. I thought my old custom setup was decent – Astro mixamp, Sennheiser HD595 and Antlion modmic but this seems to blow it out of the water, and without a cable in sight too!

Apparently in a lobby the mic was so clear it was as if I was in the room with them, and in game I found it much easier to locate directional sounds and could clearly hear footsteps in Ghosts which were strangely quiet before – I used to be able to just about make them out but not before it was too late.

Expensive yes, but worth it just for the tidier cable-less setup, the fact it is so far even better than the mixamp is a big and slightly surprising bonus!

  8. I’ve been ploughing through Uncharted 3. Awesome!! I know it’s a bit of a marmite formula, many would argue that it’s more of an interactive film than a game, but it’s so beautifully presented and sharply produced that I can’t help but love it. I’ll give Drake a break after this but I’m already looking forward to sinking my teeth into Golden Abyss!

  9. Thinking back I don’t think I played anything this week! :-/

  10. Played Gravity Rush this week, a nice little game that pulled me in with its wonderful world and fascinating world, despite some clumsy combat and wonky camera angles. Enjoyed it so much that I sat down on my day off and played the entire second half of the game in one go, much to my wife’s displeasure.

I started up Dark Souls II, played it for about six hours and then turned it off after a big troll thing with a sword bigger than the average surfboard reduced me to red paste for what felt like the fiftieth time. It was my first Souls game, and while I was really enjoying it I just don’t have the time or the patience for it.

Now I’ve started Half Life 2 again. Played it a few years ago but I never played the add on episodes. I saw it going cheap in game and had the urge to play the main game again, and then episodes 1+2.
