NGP/PSP2 OS Not Android

Though it appears Sony are snuggling up quite closely to the Android OS of late, with news that PlayStation Suite will see some PlayStation games made available on the mobile platform, Sony’s Kaz Hirai has confirmed that, despite speculation, the NGP/PSP2’s operating system is not a flavour (gingerbread or otherwise) of the Google OS. Hirai said:

Internally, PSP2 uses an original games-oriented operating system. It’s not Android. Different from the PSP, the OS has a modern framework akin to a PC.

The latter half of the statement referencing the system’s “PC qualities” adds some credence to recent reports that, unlike previous Sony hardware, the NGP is notably easier to develop for.

During the reveal in Tokyo last week a ported PSN game (Dungeon Defenders) was shown running on the new device, with developers claiming the conversion process took “about a week.”

  1. If it were Android, it would be hacked within the span of 20 seconds. Likewise, if it were similar to the PSP’s, the commonality would lead to hackers already having a decent head start.

So a brand new OS is the only viable route for them to take.

    • Let’s hope that it takes hackers a very long long time to break it when it’s released.

      • Similar to a PC?
Hackers could very well eat it for breakfast.

  2. Great news! The easier to develop for the better hopefully. Just so long as we don’t get the market flooded with complete tosh like happened with the PSX a bit and PS2 to a certain extent.

  3. It wouldn’t make sense to use Android for this. It doesn’t need notifications, multi-tasking or app management so i’d have been suprised if it was NOT proprietary.

  4. Yeah, the guy who had the intro movie of lost planet 2 on the NGP said it was easy and took about 2 weeks.

  5. Sounds awesome – sound that powerful Issac could have used this to kick Necro ass!

  6. From what I hear, Sony are making PS3-NGP ports very easy to do.

    • Very smart move.

      • Yes it is. Basically means they’ll have a big list of AAA PS3 ports to bulk up the launch title list.

    • That just does my head in thinking about this!!! A PS3 game on an hand held!!!

    • Having bought a PSP at launch, the last thing I want is bloody ports. I was much happier with the games that were designed for it.

  7. If it ran on Android no way I would buy it. Google knows already enough about me.

  8. Hang on. Did he just call it the PSP2? Slip of the tongue?

    • Ha! Well spotted!

    • Well it’s common sense to call it PSP2. NGP is too awkward and just a code name.

  9. It is pure Genius. Just how long do you guys spend thinking up these related puns.

    • Some come quite quickly. Others require caffeine and lateral thinking.

      :)

The above one was instant, if you’re interested.

    • Just had visions of writing the article in a short time the X amount of hours racking your brains for the punch line.
They do make my day at time.

    • Ha! We don’t hold back an article if we can’t think of a witty excerpt in time. Which is why you’ll often see some rather informative and dry ones.
      :)

  10. I hope their will be a better browser this time.

    • It had better, if they are going to have people pay extra for the 3g versions they need to be able to access important sites (like TSA). I can see some people choosing NGP + dumbphone instead of buying a smartphone.
