Previously Purchased PSN Content Won’t Transfer To PS Phone

There’s a lot of excitement surrounding the just announced PlayStation Phone, but we got some not-so-exciting news recently via Gamespot UK. According to managing director for Sony Ericsson UK and Ireland, Nathan Vautier, previously purchased content from the PlayStation Store will not be transferable to the Xperia Play. Here’s what Nathan had to say.

“[Xperia Play owners] will have to re-purchase the games, so it’s not totally integrated. I think the exciting thing is that there are games which people are very, very aware of.”

This is definitely some crummy news for anyone that has a fair amount of PSN content that will be compatible with the new device. Then again, if you’re excited enough about the phone to run out and buy it, you’re likely not going to complain about having to repurchase a handful of PSN games. Unless, of course, you’ve got more than a handful.

  1. For Plus members (arguably the more loyal brand fans) this could represent a significant number of PSN games and Minis, exactly the types of game I would be wanting to play on this kind of device.

  2. Hmm how to turn a potential into a no sale now.

  3. I was quite tempted by this phone, the thought of being able to play Minis and PS1 titles at work without looking like a goon sitting playing a PSP in the staff room. Looks like I still won’t be able too, no way I am purchasing everything. A foolish move by Sony (unless it was technically unavoidable), as I think this will alienate more customers than it brings in.

  4. Was buying it… now I’m not, I’ve got so much content that I was presuming I could have put onto it, it defeats it’s entire purpose to me.

  5. This has definitely unsold it for me.

  6. Aaaaaaand I don’t want one anymore.

  7. I love my PSPgo, and it goes where i go. This item was a no brainer for me as It would mean that i wouldnt not have to carry two things on me. That advantage has just disappeared.

  8. So basically Sony are saying buy the games again, even though you already paid £40 for them a decade ago, and then another £7 only 3 years ago.

Considering it took them so long to start turning profit on the PS3, I think this is commercial suicide.

I cant see this taking off at all, have they heard of the PSPgo?

  9. Basically what everyone else said, I already have a decent Android Phone and a PSP Go so there is zero incentive to buy this.
But then I’m probably not the customer they are aiming at?

  10. “clapping very slowly”
    Nice.. Job… Phone is dead.
