Community Round-Up: 25/06/16

Depending on how you took the news on Friday morning, there’s plenty to distract yourself with this weekend. With International Rugby, the Euros continuing and Wimbledon starting up on Monday, we’re spoilt for choice really. Alternatively, you might be making use of the PS4’s free multiplayer weekend, or desperately trying not to open your wallet in the Steam Summer Sale.

But for now, let’s look back on the past week in the Community Round-Up!

After last week’s quiet showing, the reviews were out in full force this week. The fighting game, Melty Blood Actress Again Current Code (what a title!), was our high scorer, on an 8/10. Miguel called the gameplay “awe-inspiring”, even after 14 years of progress. Next up was Skylanders Battlecast, Activision’s entry into the CCG genre. Jim called it a “solid, if imperfect, foundation” as a start to the series, as he gave it a 7/10.

We had a further 3 games that were awarded 7/10’s. Dom enjoyed the “Fantastic J-Pop tracks and choreographed cutscenes” in Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE, as Jim got to grips with Plague Inc. Evolved, the popular mobile game that arrived not long ago on consoles.

Demetrios – The BIG Cynical Adventure started out as a Kickstarter game, and this point-and-click puzzle game contains some ‘genuinely funny moments’ along with its well thought out puzzles. Another Kickstarter game we reviewed this week was Mighty No. 9, a spiritual successor to the Mega Man franchise. Although Dave gave it a 6/10, he said fans would “likely be fairly satisfied with how it turned out”.

Meanwhile, Dom also gave out a 6/10, this time to Mario & Sonic At The Rio Olympics 2016. With its “bright and colourful graphics” that we’d come to expect from a Nintendo game, the lack of competitive online modes really let it down, even if the multiplayer is bags of fun. Dropping down to the 5/10’s now, Pirates: Treasure Hunters suffers from a lack of innovation as it enters the MOBA genre, while Asemblance can be described as a interactive  psychological thriller.

Trials of the Blood Dragon, which was announced at E3, certainly isn’t the Blood Dragon sequel we’ve been waiting for according to Stefan, who gave it a 4/10. Finally, and on a 2/10, we had Umbrella Corps, “a downright awful dagger in the hearts of Resident Evil fans” as Jim put it.

Following up our review from Christmas, Stefan played SteamWorld Heist on PS4 and PS Vita, which makes its transition to other consoles after first appearing on the 3DS, and is also out on PC. Stefan also managed to get some interviews posted, first with a chat to Aaron McHardy on FIFA 17’s The Journey, and then to Andres Morell about Battlefield 1

Wrapping up the E3 content, the staff shared their Top Picks from 2016′s conferences, as the results of this year’s TSA E3 Bingo were announced on Monday. And on Friday, Tuffcub decided to cheer everyone up by digging up some reviews by kids for mature rated games, or as they would say it, “matur r8ted gamez”.

Finishing up, the Chronicle featured lots of E3 chat, while What We Played #259 featured Unravel, Mighty No.9 and Monster Hunter Generations.

Time to open up the Forums and have a look!

  • Del adds yet another platinum to his cabinet in the Trophy thread
  • While Avenger posts a Forza homage to Toyota with a lap around Le Mans in the videos thread.

That’s all for this week! Depending on if I can find a strong enough leash, I might possibly hand over the reins to Steven next week. Possibly.

  1. Bollocks, I would’ve forgotten all about the Steam sale if you hadn’t mentioned it! Ive spotted Prison Architect for a fiver, I think it’d be rude not to.

    • I might succumb to Cities Skylines, but I’m not sure I have enough free time for it!

      • I definitely don’t have any time for Prison Architect, it’s all just getting added to the library for when my kids leave home… They’re seven months old now.

      • Planning for the future I see!

There’s so many games in my Steam library that I haven’t even installed after getting in a sale, let alone played!

      • I’m the same! I keep buying old games just so I can play them again some day but our PC lives behind our telly so I can never be bothered with a mouse and keyboard on my lap. My backlog is massive but I think this new XBox One Bluetooth pad is gonna help, I’m hoping it’ll work well with X-Wing vs Tie Fighter!

  2. I noticed that nobody from TSA mentioned the Vote, neither was it discussed in the forums.

You probably don’t wanna talk about it. But I would wanna see a small banter without devolving into a flame war. I’d just wanna see your thoughts on this.

    • It probably would devolve into a flame war. I’ve been hugely surprised by the amount of insults, criticisms, and negativity on my Twitter feed which usually is only about gaming/racing/meets. The chances of a mature forum thread on the topic seems limited.

      • I agree, there’s been some nasty comments from friends on Facebook. Personally I think the British press are overreacting and scaremongering right now, I get the impression a lot of people are worried and see it as a backward step, things will probably be alright though. Unless Scotland leave the UK, that’d be really bad.

      • Ron I said these days something that made some people raise their eyebrows: the UK will survive after a recoil but I honestly don’t know if the EU will survive. Honest opinion.

    • To be fair, the forums are barely used nowadays. If the vote occured a few years back, it would have been discussed and devolved into who had the better cuppa and which brand makes for the better tea.

      PG TIPS FTW!

Anyone who says differently, I’ll rip ye ******* eyes out and drink them!

Personally, i’m positive about our future. Never felt we quite got our £50million a day’s worth. That’s 50 millions you know. And that is a lot more then the 40 cakes Lex Luthor once stole.

Sure, it’s punched the pound but it’s just the “Oh shit, they are really serious.” reaction to it.

I can create a thread in the ol’ forum if people fancy discussing it. It won’t turn nasty. We’re not IGN and there has been mature discussions in the past.

Back in it’s prime, it was seldom possible to discuss mature stuff.

      Followed by cock jokes. :P

  3. Leash me, Gaz and i’ll tear ye ****** nuts off!

Oh and if anyone has a mild disposition to silliness and expects a super serious round up, you may want to skip next week’s. Apparently, i drive people way by being the way i am.

Maybe it’s time i start wearing underwear around here then. :P

But the legendary resident nutter shall take over! And no, it won’t turn out like Evans Gear.

Mainly because i can actually be funny.
