Community Round-Up: 19/07/14

In a bizarre, Freaky Friday-esque turn of events, I’ll be taking on the writing of the Round-Up this week. “That’s not all that unusual,” you might say, but the twist is that Gazza’s swapping places with me to write up tomorrow’s Chronicle. Since it’s not Friday, I guess we really ought to call it Surreal Saturday or Wierd Weekend, or something.

YungJones, XBLakie_ChanX, PILLAI7 and LegendishThingy toughed it out this last week to decide who it would be to make it through to the grand final of the TSA FIFA World Cup competition. In the end, PILLAI7’s French team brushed aside LegendishThingy’s plucky Austrians, while YungJones lived up to his billing as the favourite to win the tournament, as he pulled through with a 6-3 victory over XBLakie.

Who’s going to take the silverware home, though? I guess you’ll find out this coming week.

CRU Banner - meets gt5

It’s business as usual in the meets this week, as we have GT6 on Monday, probably some RDR on Wednesday, and the usual BF4 on Friday. Battlefield 4’s a great bundle of laughs in these meets too, but don’t take my word for it, just ask the other people that were there:

I guess I ought to also point you the direction of the TSA Destiny clan, to try and get people to play together and enjoy the beta to its fullest.

However, if you’ve got more than 250 TSA Points and none of those games are your thing, then feel free to create your own Meet.

Kicking things off with the reviews this week, we saw Aran award the Ratchet & Clank Trilogy PS Vita release a lovely 8/10, as a solid port of the series to the handheld. Backing this up, Jim reviewed Duels of the Planeswalker 2015, the latest yearly addition to the Magic: The Gathering series, and gave it an 8/10 in the process.

Somewhere betwixt a review and a preview lies Matt’s first thoughts from the Battlefield 4: Dragon’s Teeth DLC pack, with a bevy of new maps and interesting if perhaps a flawed new game mode. Alongside this, he also gave his impressions from the first viewing of Doom, which came at this week’s Quakecon.

Peter’s take on The Division saw him quite impressed by the blend of shooter and RPG that Ubisoft Massive are creating, while Blair went in depth on the upcoming Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and Wii U, which is easily one of his favourite game series.

Just ahead of this week’s Destiny Beta launch, I posted an interview I conducted with Bungie’s David Dague about the game, before Peter, TSA community member Bully Burton and I dove into the beta yesterday and streamed our exploration of the world that Bungie are creating. Destiny opening its doors to the public was a big boost to an otherwise flagging summer release schedule, something about which I blogged early in the week.

Turning our eye to the regular features, and Aran returned with a Matter of Perspective that looked at the events of XCOM: Enemy Unknown, Jim took on Sonic Jump Fever in this week’s Mobile Watch and Sam returned to Kingdom Hearts 1.5 Remix for PlayBack.

The verdict rolled in for South Park: The Stick of Truth in this week’s WeView, with a near unanimous vote to Buy It (though some people voted for Moo instead…), as it sees Thief slinking into view for this coming week. The Chronicle then tackled the PS4’s performance in Japan, the potential for an Early Access scheme on PlayStation and the potential lack of patching for Diablo 3: Ultimate Evil Edition.

Rounding things out in the usual way, Jim deputised for Greg in What We Played #165, while the Podcast hit #147, as the gang talked about Gang Beasts, Mario Kart and Velocity 2X.

The Forums have been a hive of activity towards the end of the week, with one big thread leading the way:

  • The Great Destiny Beta Code Share Of 2014 has lit up the forums this past couple of days, as people have been eager to scoop up any spare codes to the beta that the generous folks with extras could give away.
  • Forrest is after some changes and alterations to the Meets system. Lend us your thoughts and we’ll see what we can do in the future.
  • A certain Mr. Barr has popped by to promote his new venture with everyone’s favourite Kris Lipscombe, a wrestling poscast called The By Gawd! Podcast. The latest episode features our very own Peter as a special guest.
  • The Battlefield 4 thread (did I mention the meets, by the way?) has shifted towards the lending of dating advice.

That’s your lot for today. I’m off to find the coolest part of the house and sit with a large fan pointed straight at my face.
